Anytime your teeth cause you pain or discomfort, it’s a sign that something is amiss. This is especially true with wisdom teeth. If your wisdom teeth have no room to come through, they can become impacted in your jaw, causing swollen, painful gums. When wisdom teeth cause problems, you can have them extracted. Dr. Kenneth Poznikoff offers wisdom teeth extraction services at Riverside Dental Clinic in Drumheller, Alberta.
About Wisdom TeethÂ
Wisdom teeth are “third” molars located way back in your jaw’s upper and lower parts. They often start to erupt between the ages of 15 and 25. If there’s room for these teeth to grow, they may come in smoothly without any problems. If there’s insufficient space for your wisdom teeth to grow, they may grow crooked or come in only partway, with the rest getting impacted in your jaw. Partially impacted wisdom teeth can cause:
- Swollen, painful gums
- Oral infectionsÂ
- Plaque build-up that can lead to cavities
- OvercrowdingÂ
- Bite problemsÂ
These issues can be resolved through wisdom teeth extraction. As wisdom teeth are extra molars that are not essential to biting or chewing, Dr. Poznikoff may recommend removing them to restore oral health.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is a fairly common dental procedure that can be completed in one dental visit. Dr. Poznikoff will numb the area, so you feel no pain during your procedure. We’ll then make a small incision in your gums to remove the bone blocking your tooth root so that Dr. Poznikoff can access your impacted tooth. Using dental forceps, we’ll remove the tooth as a whole or break it into pieces and then remove it, depending on what’s easier. We’ll then stitch your wound and cover the socket with gauze to stop any bleeding. We’ll give you instructions for protecting the extraction site until you’ve fully recovered, which generally takes about a week.
