Dental health isn’t just about annual check-ups and regular brushing; it’s also about knowing what to do when a dental disaster strikes. Many patients are uncertain about what to do when faced with a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth, or a gum injury. That’s where emergency dental services at our practice come in.
A quick call to our office at (833) 575-1855 will allow us to find an appointment to see you that day. If it is after hours, both Dr. Poznikoff and Dr. Huang can see you at our office and provide emergency treatment. Our dentists’ after-hours phone numbers are available on our answering machine when you call our office. Dr. Poznikoff is also on staff at the Drumheller Hospital and can be called in to evaluate more serious injuries. When problems arise, our team at Riverside Dental Clinic can assist!
Rinse your mouth and floss to remove any food particles. Check for swelling in the painful area, gum, or cheek. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth. Take an analgesic pain reliever like Tylenol or Ibuprofen and call our office.Â
Sometimes, broken portions of teeth can be reattached through bonding. It’s best to gather up any tooth fragments you can find, rinse them with water, and bring them in an empty pill vial to your emergency appointment. If your gum is bleeding, gently rinse your mouth and apply pressure to the gum area by biting on a clean gauze until it stops. Reduce pain and swelling by holding a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or the affected area. Take a pain reliever and call our office immediately for an emergency appointment.
Find the tooth, if possible, and handle it by the crown (the top chewing portion of the tooth). If the tooth is unclean, rinse it gently under water and put it into a pill vial or plastic baggie with milk or water. Avoid touching the root. If the tooth is a front tooth, attempt to reinsert it into the socket for older individuals, but not for children. Make sure it faces the correct way, and hold it in place. If this isn’t possible, keep the tooth in milk or store it in your mouth along your cheek. Immediately call our office. One of our dentists will provide emergency reimplantation even after hours. Prompt action with reimplantation and stabilization within the first 30 minutes increases the chance of saving the tooth.
Use dental floss to dislodge the item. If it won’t come out, see your dentist. Never use sharp objects like pins to remove it, as you could damage your gums or break it off in the tissue.
If your crown falls off, call our office immediately, and we will see you that day. Bring the crown with you in a plastic baggie or a pill vial to your emergency appointment. It is best not to try reinserting the crown onto the tooth, as you risk swallowing it. If the tooth is sensitive, you can try dabbing a bit of clove oil on it. If you lose a filling, use sugar-free gum to fill the area until you can get to the dental office.
This includes injuries to the tongue, cheeks, lips, or gums. If there’s bleeding, rinse your mouth with a mild salt-water solution, then place damp gauze on the area and apply pressure. Use a cold compress outside the injured area to reduce pain. If the bleeding doesn’t stop within 10 – 15 minutes, visit your dentist immediately.
